Energie durch piezoelektrische Bionik – Ein nachhaltiges Konzept zur Energiegewinnung, das sich trotz seiner Allgegenwärtigkeit harmonisch in das natürliche Habitat des Menschen und die Umwelt eingliedert.

Prologue Energy production and consumption are one of the most important topics of our time- worldwide.
Industrial designers must pay special attention to this topic in every design.
Industrial Design is focusing on designing serially manufactured products. Energy, in many ways, is playing a major role. Material production, production or energy balance of the product,
these are issues which certainly need to be addressed by designers, in order to meet the steadily increasing requirements of the manufacturer. In addition, design can directly take effect in energy production.
We are not physicists or mechanical engineers. Our job is rather to find new ideas through observation, to create a transfer and to create solutions and put them up for discussion. Thus we can combine some phenomena from the nature with new technical developments or also bring existing techniques into a new symbiosis.
That could provide valuable input and give visions of what role the issue of energy will play in the future.
In our section “Design Lab” we would like to take the opportunity to present our ideas and to tell you about our commitment to this relevant topic which we are continually developing.

Piezoelectric bionic The direct piezoelectric effect is a phenomenon, in which by deforming a solid object electric voltage is created. If piezoelectric material is deformed, dipoles will form within the unit cells. The summation of these dipoles generates a measurable electrical voltage. This effect can be used to gain usable power out of the lightest, non-directional wind. Structured as a tree, the bionic structured object branches out into very soft leaves that can be easily set into motion. Each object is made from equal parts and can be assembled into different levels of structures. Despite the structured, functional design and thanks to its organic effect, the “piezo palm” can be integrated into any natural environment.
